The Mantel Story

Karen McClelland, the owner of MANTEL, has a deep-rooted passion for art and design that spans decades. After teaching ceramics for 12 years in the Portland Public Schools, Karen turned her creative energy toward building a unique lifestyle shop in 2016. With an art degree from Grinnell College and a Master’s in Teaching from Lewis and Clark College, Karen brings both an eye for design and a commitment to craftsmanship to every piece in the shop.

MANTEL was inspired by the vision of a space to showcase your most cherished belongings—trinkets, treasures, and art that tell a story. Her son, Lewis, came up with the name, while her husband, Dave, played a pivotal role in bringing the dream to life through the shop’s build-out.

Located in a beautifully refurbished historic building in North Portland, MANTEL is a curated haven for playful, modern, and mostly handmade items. Specializing in ceramics, the shop features works from local Portland artists as well as creators from around the world. The thoughtfully curated selection includes jewelry, glassware, candles, blankets, linens, handbags, and more, each piece chosen for its unique design, quality, and character.

At MANTEL, Karen continues her commitment to supporting small, independent makers, ensuring that every item tells a story and adds a special touch to your life and home.
